There are two manufacturers that have rods using the Slate name. One is based in the USA, Slate Creek Rods, the other is based in Scandanavia (Norway I think. Trout Fisherman did a group review of about 16 rods about a year or so ago, the Slate rod came about 3rd or 4th, the best in test was a Sage rod of about £400+ and the best value was the Diawa Wilderness at about £90. I know I still have the magazine, so I'll try and dig it out and post you an update later.

I found the test, it was the September 2005 edition and was of 18 long casting rods, #7/8 weights. The Slate GHX 9ft 6 in model scored 94% and had a guide price of £119. A Loomis GLX Distance 10ft #8 scored 95% and it had a price of £699. A Sage XP 9ft 6in #8 at £474.99 scored top at 98% and the Daiwa 9ft 6 in Wilderness #9 at £79.99 scored 94% also. The Hardy Angel TE at £699 scored 89% so you can guage that the Slate rod was something special.

The Slate was available through Tek-Neek 01904 479797 back then. The review says "Although the Norwegian Slate name is still relatively unknown in this country, this is a great rod for the money. You can really feel the middle of the rod working. The blank is fast, light and slim and casts out a whole fly line with ease. And for a four piece there are no flat spots. This rod is a big surprise and offers great value for the money. The only criticism is that we found the handle a bit clumsy."

The poor grammar is their's not mine!

The test was performed by Peter Gathercole and Chris Dawn.

By any chance was the review rod the same model as the one you were given?

Hope all this helps.
