Hi Davie

The mono is breaking at the dropper or where it joins to the fly line?

Knots in fluorocarbon can cause problems. Some fluorocarbons are relatively stiff, have less elasticity than conventional nylon, some seem very slippery - needs a bit of practice to get reliable knots.

I lubricate my knots well before pulling them tight gently. With fluorocarbon there's less danger of damaging when pulling tight but a lot look untidy - to my mind an untidy knot is weak. Before fishing I test all the knots and try to test again every now and then when fishing - looking for wind-knots and damage at the same time.

I'd suggest getting some weaker stuff and use it to practice - tie the lower breaking strain to the stronger stuff you use now - pull until it breaks. It should break at the knot.
Experiment with the number of turns in your water knot.

Using one strength for the whole leader leaves little margin for error. I'd suggest using a higher breaking strain, thicker mono for at least the first few feet of your leader.

Magnus is correct. There is less likelihood of breakage than the knot untying with fluorocarbon; however, it certainly can happen. As he mentioned, you can experiement with the number of wraps, and consider that you may want to have an extra wrap by teh smaller diameter material, particularly if it differs by more than 2X numbers from the larger diameter.

It is a nuisance to check your knots very often, but I've found it is much less of a nuisance than losing a fish or a fly several times a day.

Hi Davie,

I often had trouble with floro breaking at the knot.In the end I put it down to the brand I was using as the problem disappeared when I switched. Funnily enough, I actually went down the price scale and found the cheaper brand much better. It could be as simple as that.
