I'd be interested to hear about the gear other people use - what and why? When you bought "it" how much was the decision about price?

Hi Magnus It is mostly about price in my case. Not that I can't afford-I could(not easily;-).But the prices of decent rods-ufff-anything justifies them? Cheers P.S. US versus UK-same price different currency-why?

Hi Magnus,
At the moment I'm using a Sharpes Gorden 9.6ft.#7.I use BFR reels because I find they're the most reliable of the cartridge type.Lines are Cortland. On the river I use a Grx 8.6ft.#5. My first rod was by D.A.M. also a 9.6ft.#7.The model was called the Quickfire Fly.I bought it when I was about 12. The cost escapes me. I still use it on Lough Derg if I know its going to be blowing a bit. It has an action similar to a poker, but it will throw 25 yards of line into a gale with ease! |

I have far too many rods and reels to list. Been fly fishing for 20 years, worked in the industry for the last 13 years, both directly and indirectly, and have changed my requirements a lot. I started with the ubiquitous 9'6" #7, but moved down the scale pretty quickly. I no longer fish still water, though due to my job, I'm going to be dragged kicking to Blagdon. For that I'll be using an Orvis Zero Gravity 9' #5, apart from piking this is as heavy as I'll go, the majority are between 6'-8' from #2-#4. A number of my rods are custom built completely to my spec, the latest being a 4'#4. As for reels, Abel, Gilmore, Orvis and Youngs are in the mix. Price has never affected the decision to purchase.
If it's above a 4wt, it's built for Tarpon. |

Hi Magnus, On open rivers & small stillwaters I mainly use either a 10' #3 Greys Streamflex or a 10' #4 Scierra HM2, both light and crisp enough for dry fly which I prefer to nymphing. The length gives superior line control and they work well with the 14 to 18' leaders that I generally use. On small overgrown streams I use either a 7' #3 Reddington Wayfarer 5 piece or an Orvis TLS 8' #1 weight & sometimes a 9' #3 Scierra HM2; the Reddington is a true #3 weight & will even work with just a leader, but the Orvis is better teamed up with a #2 weight for short range work & roll casting. I have other rods, but rarely use them these days. Cheers, Dave Southall |
