CARSINGTON WATER. Rod average 1.6. Rod average is a slight improvement on last week, despite several hot and bright days again. This may be due to several anglers adopting a deep approach with either large fry patterns or tube flies fished up to 30ft deep. Good quality fish in the 2-3lb bracket have been showing in good numbers this week. Fish seem to be very widespread across the whole of the reservoir so being prepared to be move around is a must. Fishing on the drift at the moment seems to be more productive, especially on heavy sink lines fishing fry patterns in deep water. However, as always, exceptions to every rule be prepared to chop and change throughout the day as fish can be very close to the surface one moment and down deeper the next.
RUTLAND WATER. Rod average 3.21. An excellent week with a lot of fish over 3lb reported. Most were taken in the main basin and the south arm around the sailing limits and Old Hall across to Gibbets. Bank fishing is starting to do well with fish coming in range along the Normanton bank, New Zealand point, Cardiac Hill, Mound bank and Stockie Bay well worth a try. Prospects are looking good with the fry starting to come in around the weed beds, also a lot of daddies are starting to hatch and getting blown on to the water.
GRAFHAM WATER. Rod average 3.2. Another good week at Grafham with fish moving on, or very near, the surface. Anglers are reporting excellent sport on red or claret dries in all parts of the lake, especially along the dam wall face and the central parts of the water. The cooler weather means that the recent algal bloom at the eastern end of the lake has now gone. Best boat areas: central drifts, west end, savages creek, the boils and bowl of dam. Best bank areas: pylon point, deep water point, bowl and south end of dam and G buoy. Best methods: floating or slow intermediate lines, sparklers, diawl bachs or minkies fished behind a sparkler booby or floating fry.
RAVENSTHORPE RESERVOIR. Rod average 8.0. Ravensthorpe continues to provide outstanding fishing for both boat and bank anglers with most fish being caught in the top 2ft of water. The green algae has now gone and fish are moving in all areas of the reservoir chasing daddies and the first hatches of olives. Best methods are floating lines with nymphs and dries such as damsels, Diawls, Hares ears and daddies all accounting for fish – Soldier Palmers and Invictas from drifting boats are taking a lot of fish in ripple and cloud conditions. Best boat areas: all areas. Best bank areas: dam wall
PITSFORD WATER. Bank anglers are enjoying good sport at present with fish gorging themselves on a diet of mainly daphnia. Top areas to fish are Stilton Point and Bog Bay and the Gorse and Gravels. Best boat areas: Pines, Narrows, main bowl. Best bank areas: Gravels, Sermans, Stilton Point. Best methods: floating lines and big dry flies sometimes pulled quick in front of a fish to tempt them, or the washing line has also scored with a large booby on the point to keep it up – this method has proved deadly recently.
LOCH FITTY. The main loch has been fishing exceptionally well especially these last two weeks with many anglers seeing large hatches of Daddies offering great top of the water sport, as the last week's temperatures started to cool, anglers had to revert to fishing traditional wets or Buzzers on floating or intermediate lines. Best Flies: Ace of Spades, Kate McLaren, Daddies, Damsel & Orange Blobs. Best Lines are varying from Slow Intermediates to Floaters. Best Areas are the Fitty Deeps, Cushat Woods and West Buoy. Teal Bay has been fishing well this week with Nymphs and Buzzers and the occasional Damsel pattern mostly fished on Floaters or Intermediate lines.
EYEBROOK.. At last, the bank is fishing at Eyebrook again. Margins have cooled enough to allow feeding fish to forage for food items close, and within range of bank rods. Several bank rods located good quality rainbows off the Willows area and took fish on a Daddy-long-legs and Hares Ear Nymph patterns. Boat fishing is continuing well, mostly on the surface, although some days the fish are responding better to sunk line tactics.
