I was wondering why very few people post on this board. Has there ever been a 'hot' topic (20 or more posts?)
Perhaps it's English Conservatism (is that a word)?
Maybe the board could use a re-vamp....it's not the most user friendly.
Thoughts anyone?

Other than Bob's of course....but considering the number of people that have read it, only 24 posts is a bit dire dont you think?

Conservatism is a word, although in this context it should be spelled with a small "c" since it doesn't apply to a political movement. Some posters are Scots too!
On the subject of "ease of use". I don't find it too hard, but them I'm a computer support analyst.

I am not sure we British are shy or for that matter other international users of the site. I don't have difficulty with the site and find it fairly straightforward to use despite my limited computer skills. One thing that I have noticed is the rather sarcastic replies to recent posts from certain quarters.I personally don't care if certain people get a kick out of such negative remarks but I do think it discourages people posting to the forum. No one likes to be made to feel stupid or inferior. The forum is,and I may be wrong, supposed to cater for people of all ages and abilities whether they fish for stockies or wild fish. With this in mind we should try and make our comments constuctive and positive. Lets try and make the forum an enjoyable place to visit for people of all experience levels and we may get more posts.

If there was any sarcasm in my reply then I apologise immediately. I thought the wink would give away the fact that I was kidding. Once again, apologies if I caused any offence

You'll find that a lot of top publications have adopted Snitz forums to run thier bulletin boards. It is one of the best vB applications around.
I appreciate the comments though and would be grateful for elaboration on what you find difficult about using these forums. That way i can pass the comments onto the developers.
cheers

Umm the fact that I can only reply with a quote, the fact that I can't re-edit or delete my post when its posted, the fact that I can't tell whether I'm logged in or out (is the login necessary when I have to supply my username/pwrd to post on the board anyway?)
It's mainly the no re-editing option which gets me.
My favourite bb is php
Also, It would be nice to be sent an email that someone has responded to a post (like php does)

As a frequent user of the Internet, e-mail and bulletin boards as part of my job, I find this one OK (ish). I find it easier to follow a conversation than most I've seen. I particularly appreciate the "smiley faces" as I can never remember the codes for showing emotion. However, there are a couple of things:
Preview button never seems to show any text. You cannot delete posts sent in error. The message box is too small causing too much scrolling, although you can set the screen size to make it a bit bigger. The formatting buttons are awkward to use (no WYSIWYG). The Mode pull-down doesn't seem to do anything useful. The lack of a spell-check can be frustrating.
I don't think auto-email notification when soemone has supplied a reply is an especially good idea unless it can be customised. The trouble is with it is that you tend to get an awful lot of e-mails!
Replying with a quote is always good etiquette - you can always cut out the parts of the quote you don't need using either <snip> or an ellipsis (...) & I don't find it irritating.
I do agree that having to supply a username and password all the time is a pain, though you can get IE to remember your passwords so that it completes them automatically.

You obviously haven't tried using many of the buttons. You can re-edit your posts by clicking on the pencil icon which will only be visible above your own posts. Same goes for the little trash can icon which enables you to delete postings made by yourself.
There is a message to tell you if you are logged in or out beside the big yellow button at the top. Also if the button says LOGOUT you are obviously logged in??????
To reply to a topic without a quote click on the reply to topic bottom at the top and bottom of the thread.
I suggest you have look at the FAQs - it's the button that says FAQs at the top of the page :)

Dear Damsel Nymph,
What Pencil Icon/Trash Icons?
The only Icons that I see on any post are: Show profile, email poster, reply with quote, go to top of page. There are no other Icons available to me.
There is no option at the top or bottom of the topic to reply, hence having to reply with quote.
There is a problem with the login and I wonder if that is why I cannot get access to these features that you say are there.
When I log in it tells me that it has been sucessful, then the screen re-freshes - like it would.
However, the yellow button still says 'login' and nowhere on the page does it say 'logout' - hence my comment, am I logged in or out?
At least the site has been updated!

| Damsel Nymph, I also login but always have a "login" button and must login everytime I change a page. Likewise I do not have any of the editing buttons you mention. So obviously, the system is not working as you believe it is:>) |

LOGIN / LOGOUT doesn't change to reflect status. There are no pencil / trash icons. The preview still doesn't work and if you refresh the view when in edit mode, it blows away the text. The same thing happens if you forget to supply your login name and password prior to posting. Inserting the "smiley faces" doesn't work properly - they don't insert that the current cursor position. You can't save the screensize settings for future posts (a pain). Yes - I've read the FAQ (when in doubt, RTFM) and it's not all that great. I'm afraid I'm with wretched_mess here, although as a support professional I'm probably more used to it and simply shrug my shoulders.
Maybe we have a versioning problem? I'm running Windows XP SP2 and IE6 with all the security patches in place. What system is the site code tested on?

I think I might have found the source of the trouble. If you look at your IE status line when in the forum, is a "stop" sign showning? If it is, double-click on it and it will probably show that the forum cookies have been blocked. I have set an individual setting for the forum site to always allow it to use cookies. I'll check this out and let you know.
