Posted - 13/10/2005 : 03:45:15 EYEBROOK. Rod average 2.05. A light north-westerly breeze started the week and small, black terrestrial flies were the order of the day; a standard floating line set up for loch style fishing and a team of size 12 wet flies and the killing pattern, a Bibio. The best areas seemed to be around Mucky Bay or drifts taken off the Chestnut Tree, short drifts out from the bank covered small pods of rising trout, which savagely pulled at dark, wet flies, slowly retrieved. Rainbows and browns alike are turning onto roach and perch fry, so angler would do well to fish patterns to match (Ethafoam fry, Spondoolies, or White Muddlers etc), fished around weed beds or even open water.
RUTLAND WATER. Rod average 2.97. Big fish are starting to show with an estimated rainbow around 8lb hooked and lost off the bank in Whitwell Creek. Numbers of browns are also beginning to show, with one angler returning six fish last Saturday. Anglers are reporting lots of follows and pulls whilst fishing, with fish still only showing small amounts of food, fry and nymphs, buzzer and olives in stomach contents. Best bank areas – Sykes Lane, East Creek, New Zealand Point, the mound, Normanton, Armley Wood. Best methods – fry patterns, Boobies, Minkies pulled, Diawl Bach, Pheasant Tail, Black Tadpole.
GRAFHAM WATER. Rod average 2.26. Grafham has fished well this week for both bank and boat anglers. Bank anglers are enjoying the best of the action as the vast majority of trout are now feeding well into the margins of the reservoir, especially on the north shore. The best areas for bank anglers have been pylon and deep water points, hill farm, hedge end and G buoy with the harbour still producing good catches of trout. Boat anglers have had good fishing from the west bank, G buoy area and the sailing club frontage. Where bank anglers have been catching in large numbers the boat anglers have been taking the bigger fish. Most boat anglers have been fishing intermediate lines with Minkies and Cats Whiskers. Best boat areas – west bank, G buoy, sailing club frontage. Best bank areas – pylon point, deep water point, hedge end, hill farm and G bank area. Best methods (bank) – floaters with Diawl Bachs, Crunchers, Buzzers, Minkies and Cats Whiskers. Best methods (boat) – intermediate lines with Minkies, Cats Whiskers and Boobies.
PITSFORD WATER. Rod average 1.7. Good fish are continuing to come out of Pitsford, the best this week being a 7lb 10oz brown trout caught by local angler Pete Cousins on a Minkie from a boat just off the Pines. Fish are still close to the marginal weedbeds, gorging on sticklebacks and the best method has been a floating line with floating Fry or Minkies for both boat and bank anglers, with the same flies on an intermediate worth a try for the boat men. Best boat areas – Pines, Main Bowl. Best bank areas – Rigbys Point, Sermans, cliffs. Best methods – floating lines, floating fry, intermediate lines, Minkies, Minky Boobies.
RAVENSTHORPE RESERVOIR. Rod average 3.9. Fish are feeding in and around the weedbeds on corixa and fry with olives hatching when conditions allow. The best methods are Peas (see Bev Perkins in November issue of FF&FT), Fritz lures and Damsels on slime lines or Diawls, GRHE, Invictas and PTN’s on floaters in ripple and dull conditions. Sport is steady on the dam with fish moving close in and responding to both small Nymphs and lures. Best boat areas – Coton end to island. Best bank areas – dam near valve tower.
Week ending October 8
DRAYCOTE. Rod average 3.20. In the last week of the brown trout season, boat angler Mr Lee Henfry of Leicester caught one of 5lb to the Silver and Gold Tube fly. Many rainbows over 6lb caught this week. Cornfield, Toft, Rainbow Corner and Dunn's Bay have been the best areas. Minkie, Zonka, Goldhead Damsel, Black Buzzer and Green Fritz Nymph have been successful patterns.
